Kihei Youth Center (KYC) is an outstanding organization in South Maui dedicated to the care and development of our community's keiki (children).
RCKW partners with KYC on a number of occasions during the year, including a monthly Dinner and Movie Night. During the holidays, RCKW sponsors a Holiday Party with entertainment, Santa, and gifts for the children. Families in need are 'adopted' by Rotarians and given special gifts or funds to enable the family to enjoy a special meal and time together. Last year, RCKW collected over $3200 for gifts to 70 children and 10 families.
RCKW worked out a special deal with Roy Sakuma, noted ukulele instructor in Hawaii, for the purchase of 53 ukulele for KYC. Mr. Sakuma generously donated half of the ukulele and RCKW donated the rest. KYC students are now enjoying music lessons as one of their after-school programs!
It is not a one-way partnership with KYC--they give back to not only the community, but to RCKW as well. The center provides homemade ti lei to the Rotary Club for guest speakers and for special occasions. They also host a Thanksgiving meal where RCKW is the guest! In addition, they have participated in important Rotary projects--for instance, they held a car wash and donated a large percentage to a Bali school project.
The relationship between RCKW and KYC has been remarkable and rewarding--from both sides!
