The Week's Meeting Recap

The August 25th meeting of the Rotary Club of Kihei-Wailea was opened by President Roya.  Since many people were still getting their lunch and chatting, we enjoyed a few minutes of fellowship prior to opening the meeting with a Flag Salute led by Bob Dunning.

Roya welcomed visiting guests and dignitaries.

Announcements:

Carol Perry reminded us that volunteers are needed for Read Aloud programs at the local schools.

  • It was announced that Sept 11 will be a benefit dinner and entertainment at Mulligan's for Darbee Fisher.  Tickets are available at $40.
  • Oct. 23 will be a joint-club venture called Zumba in the Park and anyone interested in assisting with logistics and planning is welcome to contact President Roya to volunteer.
  • The Weinberg Foundation requires that 25 Rotary members be present to fix up the KYC facility to qualify for the grant.  All members are welcome to participate on September 25 at the KYC.  Jobs are many and varied, but no ‘heavy lifting' is expected.

We welcomed guests from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Maui, to which Jeanne Duberstein presented a check from our school supply drive.  The funds and school supplies will go to assist students who have a hard time buying the required classroom supplies that are expected at the beginning of every school year.

Happy Dollars were collected by Rob and many members were happy or made announcements while contributing to the Koa Bowl.

Ronni introduced the speaker, Dr. Barnes from Wayland Baptist University on Oahu.  The school primarily serves the military with the goal of ‘graduation' for each attendee, rather than just taking classes.

The speaker gave us an inspiring challenge regarding business, management, leadership and its reality in our lives. While Maui moves a little ‘slower' than some places, it none the less, moves, and we need to understand what people need to be successful. People are addicted to ‘more'.  More service, more value, more product.  Staff should be challenged to provide ‘more' in the form of exceeding the expectations of the customer or client.

In the old days this used to be called ‘customer service' but things have evolved and the goal of exceeding expectations is to promote the goal of customer loyalty.  Become the only place that your customer would ever consider going to receive the service/product you are promoting.  To achieve loyalty you must 1) exceed expectations 2) eliminate hassles and 3) make magical moments happen during their experience.

Dr. Barnes reminded us that an unhappy customer tells everyone about his experience and that is negative advertising!  A happy customer repeats their experience and refers future customers.

The meeting was closed by President Roya with the 4 Way Test.

The Four Way test of things we think, say, and do

First- Is it the truth?

Second- Is it fair to all concerned?

Third- Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

Fourth- Will it be beneficial to all concerned? .... And

Fifth- Is it fun?

RCKW Mission Statement: In the spirit of the Rotary Four-Way Test, strive to improve the lives, health, and well being of citizens (with a special emphasis on children) in our community and that of underprivileged communities around the world.  Achieve meaningful results for our service projects in an atmosphere of fun, fellowship, and aloha.
