MAUI FOOD DRIVE:
Marlene Rice from the Maui Food Drive thanked our club for our help both with the food drive at Safeway, the food drop, and donations we give them. She reported they give about $5000 worth of food each week! President Barb is giving us the opportunity to share weekly change we have in our pocket as donation to the Maui Food Bank. A container will be passed around each week until her last meeting as president in June.
ROTARY FOUNDATION:
Bob Dunning representing our club gave Cynthia Clark an award and pin for becoming a Benefactor for the Rotary Foundation. Cynthia also received her pin for PH+1. Congratulations, Cynthia!

Cynthia was asked to share information on the GSE team, how it is chosen, and what it stands for. The Group Study Exchange will be coming to Maui this week from Denmark and will be visiting different aspects of this Island. Mainly, this is a cultural exchange that will include what the team is interested in. Thank you Cynthia for getting us ready for the visitors we will meet this week and next.
On that same note: Our club is hosting a GSE party at Wailea Point May 13th, 6 – 9 PM. If you haven’t signed up yet and want to go please call or e mail Billie Moksnes. We need a complete list for the kiosk before the event to get in the gate. Don’t forget to bring a side dish. Either a salad, dessert, or pupu will do!
SPEAKERS:
Three representatives from the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission gave us a picture of the history, culture and future of this island we see daily from Maui. We heard from Kapono’ ai Molitau who lead us in song as well as explained some of the cultural history of the island. Ellen Palissaro is the Outreach Coordinator. Jackson Bauer is the Volunteer Coordinator. The main activity at this point is to preserve and restore the island by clearing ordinance, planting native plants, and preserving cultural sites on the island.
One third of the island has been destroyed. After Captain Vancouver came in 1792 he saw the need to introduce other animals such as the goat, and the horse. They all but ate and trampled the vegetation. The other big factor that lead to the destruction of the island was the bombing as a practice range during WWII and for 50 years afterwards. So far $350 million dollars have been spent clearing the ordinance from the island.
One question asked of the speakers was what we as a club could do to help. Right now they have a 1 ½ year waiting list for volunteers who want to go to Kaho’olawe to help restore the island. But help is needed in the office here, as well as monetary gifts to fund the preserving and restoring.
