Speaker: Jamie David a former teacher
and writer of children's books. She wrote "Johann Sebastian Humpbach". A substitute teacher on Maui for 30 years - she became a permanent fixture at the Lokelani & BHS campuses. The first influence that inspired the Johann concept of the whale was a t-shirt design contest put on by Crazy Shirt. Jamie created a wonderful design that she was sure would win -- it did not but that didn't stop her. Her second influence came from a conversation with a manager at Borders. Seems only a handful of books have been written for the intermediate level age group on Maui in the past 50 years.
Jamie has past experience in writing and editing non-fiction work, but not much experience in writing. Her final influence came from a mid-level student asking in a heavy pidgin accent "Eh! Why you never written one b ook?" This was her "A-ha!" moment. She decided at that moment it was time to write a book, thus the creation of Johann Sebastian Humpbach.
After a number of years & a few rejections, she finally found an editor that was willing to print her book! Her perseverance, motivation, and conviction paid off.
